Birthday Gift Ideas for an 8 year old

BIRTHDAY GIFT IDEAS

*This post contains affiliate links

I can not believe it is my big girls birthday on Friday. Where have these 8 years gone. It seems like only yesterday since she was born. She is growing and changing everyday and is well on her way to becoming a beautiful, caring and smart young lady.

Her thoughts and mind are completely her own. And even though there are days I don’t quite understand her logic she still entrances me with her ideas and mad ways.

Each year I find it more of a struggle about what to get her for her birthday gift. It seems that children these days – or maybe it’s just mine – have everything. This year I asked BG1 what would she like for her birthday. Her response – Surprise me! SURPRISE ME!

This year I really had to think hard about what to buy an 8 year old for her birthday. When it was LMs birthday in December, that was easy. I had no problem buying toys for him. However BG1 is that much older now, and although she loves toys she has grown out of many things she used to play with. That and the fact I think she could open her own toy store already.

The birthday gift

I thought long and hard and this is what we have bought our 8 year old this year for her birthday.

The World of David Walliams: Bumper-tastic CD Story Collection £17.99

Roald Dahl’s Marvellous Colouring-Book Adventure (Colouring Books) £4.99

Ravensburger Disney Eye Found It £14.99

Write Your Own Storybook £6.99

Creative Writing Book £3.99

My Little Man is five

my little man is five

Five years today I had a beautiful 6lb 6oz baby boy in my arms. A boy that captured my heart and continues to keep that heart locked in his tiny hugs. Hugs that are so damn adorable I may just burst one day. If you haven’t read little mans birth story you should check it out here.

Five years! Where the hell has that time gone? Five years and my little man is the sweetest, confident and kind hearted little boy I know.

Today we are celebrating with tea at McDonalds with his little girlfriend. (I know cute right my five year old has a girlfriend. They have been inseparable since they started nursery when they were three.)

Since I started blogging six months ago! I know six months that’s huge and I completely forgot to do a six month bloggiversary post, probably because the baby has had a chest infection and been very poorly. Any way, in that six months I have read many other bloggers kids birthday post which included a questionnaire. A questionnaire asked to the child to look back on as they grown and their thoughts, need and feelings change over the years. I love this idea and so decided to ask Little Man a bunch of questions for this post.

My advice to you on your 18th Birthday

my advice to you

My little cousin turns 18 today! I say ‘little’ because I still think of her as the little girl dancing on the picnic table in our garden in a tutu. Or the little girl I used to babysit and make up bedtime stories of the Malteaser princess to get her to sleep (not that she ever did go to sleep). I really cannot believe that it has been 18 years since she was born. It really does put into perspective for me how quickly things change, how time is forgotten and how even though we grow older we still feel young (most days – unless the baby has been up since 5am and your surviving on extra strong coffee).

It doesn’t feel that long ago when I turned 18. It really does feel like a year or two ago. It wasn’t – it has been ten years since I turned 18.

Ten years ago I hadn’t met my husband, I wasn’t a mummy and I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I was older – and still don’t have a clue. At 18 I was a supervisor at a lingerie store, I had just finished my A levels and didn’t have a clue how the world worked! If I’m honest I am probably still a little clueless.

In the last ten years I went to Disney land Paris (twice) met my husband which spiralled into a huge amount of life changing events. I had my first baby, got married, had my second baby, fell in love with books and writing, changed jobs a few times, had a third baby, realised that life is so precious, bought a house, bought a cat to put in the house I bought and started blogging.

Ten years doesn’t feel long at all and sometimes I wish I could go back and do things differently. But life isn’t about having regrets or changing what has been, it’s about learning from those mistakes and regrets and doing things the way you choose. The way you want to do them.

So I would like to give my 18 year old cousin some advice (if you can call it that), that I wish I knew when I was 18.

  • Don’t be in a rush to grow up and do it all at once, you have time, even if it does go super fast. Do what you want when you want to do it, you shouldn’t live your life on somebody else’s time line. Or be in a rush to do all those grown up things that can wait until you have finished having fun.
  • Have fun! Have so much fun you get dizzy, but always stay safe. Let someone know what you are doing and who you are with. No matter how old you are your mum will always worry.
  • You don’t have to know what you want for your future, sometimes we aren’t supposed to know. But if you do know, if you know that it is right for you then go get it with both hands and don’t let go. Put everything you have into it.
  • Travel, whether its travelling just England or the entire world just do it. There will be a time where it is too late and one of those things you will regret.
  • Lastly save your little heart out. Being good with money is a must for anybody.

I hope you have a wonderful 18th birthday beautiful girl x

My Sunday Photo 10 – birthday flowers

photo

I missed Last weeks Sunday photo. It was a hectic week with both mine and my sisters birthday. But I am back this week with a photo from my birthday. My husband had some beautiful flowers and vase delivered to my door for my birthday. I love flowers, they can make any occasion feel special, and I certainly felt that. I loved my flowers and they are still sat in my living room today after being delivered 12 days ago.

Birthday Date Night – cocktails and all.

birthday cocktails

It’s been a week since my birthday. A whole week? Where did that time go, seriously it has taken me this long to write this post? It’s just been sat there half written for days, but it is now finally finished.

I’m a whole year older!

On my birthday the hubby and I finally got out for our date night. It had been a good 6 months since our last night out together. I honestly don’t know where the time has gone. To say the least we deserved a night to ourselves.

spoilt lady

I received a beautiful bouquet of flowers delivered to the door they day before my birthday.

Before the evening even started I was presented with a stunning eternity ring by the hubby. It was perfect, delicate yet unusual and so me.

preparation ritual

Firstly I set about finding something to wear on my date. I created an outfit wish list a couple of days before so I knew what kind of things I wanted. I tried on five dresses before settling on a blue butterfly tea dress. The beach gets cold quite quickly in the evenings so I paired it with some black leggings. Then came the dilemma of what to put on my feet. I dug through all the bags and boxes right to the bottom of my wardrobe and pulled out some grey tweed pumps – that I have only worn once in the past three years. With my outfit sorted I proceeded with my make up.

birthday date night - make up

It doesn’t take me hours to do my make up, maybe an hour at the absolute max – the hubby may disagree though. Tonight was around forty minutes. I set all the items I would need on the bed next to me and had the mirror propped in my crossed legs. I don’t have units in my bathroom or a lovely dressing table I can sit at so this has to do. I turn on the music and prepare my face.

More often than not the kids will make an appearance to dance along to my music or ask “why do you need mascara mummy?” in which I reply “Not everyone is blessed with long beautiful eyelashes like your little man.”

I keep my make up light as we are going to the beach and the wind will cause havoc anyway, I wouldn’t want panda eyes. I even manage to take a few selfies. I hate taking selfies but I was excited about the evening so I gave it a go. They turned out better than I expected.

date night - selfie

party in the kitchen

Growing up in my house when my parents would be getting ready for a night out, the music would be turned up and we would be dancing and singing in the kitchen. Moments that even now my sisters and I enjoy looking back on. It only feels right that I make this ritual a part of my own families. While in the kitchen straightening my hair LM & BG1 were dancing to tunes I had put on. Me and hubby joined in once my hair was done.

date nigh - couple selfies

lets get the date started

Nanny arrived to babysit the kids and we were dropped off at the beach at about quarter to seven. I don’t know about you but we like to get the evenings started early.

We headed into the bar on the waterfront for our evening meal. With it being the summer holidays and this being a popular bar we expected it to busy. It wasn’t, we arrived early enough to sit at a good table and got served quickly.

The hubby pulled out a chair and I sat in the one next to it. He glared at me, a smile pulling at his  lips.

“I pulled a chair out for you, but okay. There goes my trying to be romantic.”

I laughed, bless he tried and it went straight over my head. I don’t ever remember him pulling a chair out for me before, I wasn’t expecting it. If I had, I would gladly have taken it. Next time he should make his intensions more clear.

I ordered brie wedges and chutney for starters knowing the hubby ordered squid rings so I could steal his too and have the best of both.

Once our main meals arrived the hubby shook his head when the camera appeared to capture the food placed in the front of me. Yet no body else bats an eyelid at my actions because it has become socially acceptable – if not expected – to take pictures of our food and upload them to social media. Or in my case share them here on my blog.

date night - food

We didn’t hang around too long once we had finished our meals. We were too stuffed for dessert so decided to wait until later to decide what we would have.

date night beach

Hand in hand along the beach

date night - hand holding

Making our way down to the sand . We began to walk the length of the beach hand in hand edging closer to the sea. I didn’t want to get too close, I envisioned the hubby hauling me off my feet and chucking me in the water. He didn’t though.

date night - feet

I tried to persuade the hubby to collect seashells with me and create a heart with them in the sand. He just laughed at me “Why do I have to collect the seashells?” he asked “Because I would get sandy hands if I did it!” Obviously. Instead we drew hearts with our feet.

date night - hearts in the sand

We walked a little further and headed up and over the pebble ridge to the other side to see the horses. However they were too far away so we made the decision to head back to the arcades.

date night - scene

Walking just the two of us you notice things that you wouldn’t necessarily notice with the kids around. I also had a childish head on and took pictures of everything including:

date night - gold statue

Who needs a silver surfer – when you can have a gold surfer!

date night cattle grid

date night - happy cafe

We passed the happy café – it used to be a toilet block, now it’s a volunteer café for student chefs.

Being the big kids that we are we hurried into the arcade. It didn’t take long to spend all the cash we had. They even had finding Dory grabbing machines. ooooohhhhhh I really wanted one – for the kids of course. The hubby tried to win me one without much success.

birthday cocktails

All day I had in my head that I wanted needed a cocktail. It’s been years since I had one. I decided it was time we started a birthday tradition – The birthday cocktail. Making it absolutely necessary that on my birthday I was presented with a cocktail – sparklers preferred but not essential. So we stopped off at the only bar that served cocktails at the beach.

The hubby ordered two blue lagoons – one of my favourites – for a jaw dropping £12. Where was wetherspoons when you need one.

date night cocktail

The wind was blowing and it was getting chilly but that doesn’t stop us from taking our drinks outside to where the waves were crashing upon the rocks.

date night tree

While the view was beautiful and the night was perfect, the drinks sucked. I was kind of bummed they tasted like alcohol and water. Not like the blue lagoon I know and love. We should have listened to the warning signs – when the bar staff have to check how to make a drink from a list, it can’t be good.

dessert run

date night me

After the disappointment of the drinks we had one last stop – DESSERT. A date isn’t complete without something sweet. Where did we go? I hear you ask. TESCO! Yes that’s right, we walked to Tesco for dessert. By the time we got there the slight buzz of alcohol appeared and I got a little bit hyper – like a two year old on smarties. It made shopping way more fun.

We picked up ice-cream and squirty cream. We already had chocolate galaxy birthday cake to go with it.

Now it may only be half past nine but we were ready to go home. After all it was getting dark, that counts right? It’s normal for mummy and daddy to end the night by half past nine? We waited in the car park for our ride.

When we arrived home from our date BG1 was still up. Once we shuttled her off to bed, we spent the rest of the evening cuddled on the sofa laughing along with cougar town.

We didn’t even eat our dessert, we ended up eating it the night after.

I had an amazing birthday and loved my date night with the hubby.

Happy Birthday to me

happy birthday

Today is my Birthday!  28 years ago today I was nothing more than a pink 5lb 10oz bundle in my mother’s arms. And now, 28 years later I am a mother myself. I am another year older which only means one thing these days, my kids are another year older.

I love birthdays, not just my own in fact I live now for my kids birthdays more than my own.  My birthday was so exciting, I was lucky in that my birthday was always in the summer holidays so no school for me! My mum would go all out decorating the house in balloons and banners, which I now to for my own children. Birthdays are the one day that even as an adult you can be spoiled and get away with it.

The excitement of waking up and knowing that this is your special day as a child, each year could choose what we wanted to do for our birthday. We could go to the amusement park, go cinema, out for tea it was the birthday girls choice. I still carry this on with my own children, making every birthday special for them.

When it came to tea we could choose where  or what we ate. When we were young it would be a tea party with the cousins, as we grew a bit older it was the treat of eating out, I always chose Wimpy, where as my sisters were always McDonald’s fans. As I grow older we still use birthdays as a chance to eat out, although these days it is usually just me and the hubby, although I still make a tea party for the kids before we leave.

And let’s not forget the cake. I have never been one for shop bought birthday cakes, I have never really like them unless they were chocolate. So every year I had a chocolate cake. Today will be no different, LM has picked out my birthday cake this year and has chosen a chocolate galaxy cake, he chose it while saying ‘Mummy always eats galaxy it’s her favourite.’ He is not wrong I applaud his choice in cake. Date night outfit wish list!

Birthday date night

This week the hubby is taking me out for my birthday. Each year we go out for a meal just the two of us, nothing extravagant. However it has been so long since we have had a date night I want it to be more special. I wish I had thought about it sooner and bought a new for the occasion.

Instead I have put together a  ‘I would have bought if I had thought about it’ birthday wish list. Continue reading
